The Jack Pyre

I am very inspired by the Group of Seven, and of course Tom Thomson’s iconic Canadian painting, The Jack Pine. I am also very concerned about the environment, the devastation of which is brought home to many year after year via the Forest Fire smoke that hangs over many North American cities in the summer. Thomson was infamous for travelling deep into the wilderness in search of the inspiration for his paintings, I wonder how far he’d have to travel through our burnt landscapes to find inspiration today.
My painting is inspired by The Jack Pine, although I show it burnt against a hazy orange sky. This work is acrylic paint on canvas, and it includes natural forest materials (bark and leaves) taken from the site of a former forest fire in Quebec.
